* The human half of a half-demon, V was severed from his original self by the sword Yamato; an heirloom inherited from his demon father.
* His original self, Vergil, is one of twin sons to the Dark Knight Sparda and his human wife, Eva. Sparda's legacy is the sense of justice that woke inside of him when he fell in love with Eva. He went on to seal the passageways between the human and demon realms.
* Sparda's betrayal against the demon king, Mundus, did not go unpunished. In the Dark Knights absence, demon troops were sent to the Sparda family manse where they were ordered to find and kill Eva and the children.
* Eva hid Dante and was killed while she searched for her other son. Vergil was out on the lawn, where he was cornered and attacked by demons. His demonic powers came to an early fruition in order to protect himself, and he subsequently fled believing that Eva and Dante had already run without him.
* Vergil would go on to live a lonely life where he honed his demonic powers and studied the occult throughout the human realm. Late in his teen years, he would encounter a tutor in the demonic; a human sorcerer named Arkham. The sorcerer would inevitably betray and mislead him.
* After being convinced by Arkham of the merits of unlocking the complex mechanism of a hell gate, Vergil is confronted by Dante about his disregard for the safety of the human realm. They clash over it repeatedly, but in the end Vergil is overpowered. He chooses to take the portal to hell as it closes rather than accept his defeat.
* In hell, he is captured by the demon king Mundus. He is tortured and violently brainwashed and physically reshaped into a demonic knight of Mundus's liking. As 'Nelo Angelo', he is sent back to the human realm to confront Dante again at Mundus's behest. He is defeated once more and presumed to be dead.
* Psyche, he's not. However, he has been grievously damaged. He wanders, disintegrating and bitter about his failures. He becomes convinced that his humanity is his weakness and that he could easily have defeated Dante all those years ago if it wasn't holding him back.
* He retrieves the Yamamoto, which has found its way to his own bastard son. In taking back the blade, he does injurious harm to Nero and then disappears. He returns to the burned out remains of the Sparda family manse and stabs himself with the Yamaoto. This creates a human and a demon.
* The demon, Urizen, triggers a demonic rite that sends a Qliphoth tree spreading all over Red Grave City, sucking its people dry of blood in order to feed its demonic fruit. Eating this fruit imbues one with powers great enough to be recognized as the king of Hell.
* The human, V, is left with minimal energy to survive on and begins to disintegrate. By creating a group pool of magic with 3 of Vergil's powerful nightmares from his time in hell, he is able to rush after Urizen. He gets in touch with both Dante and Nero, alerting them to the new enemy without explaining who either of them are.
* The demon hunters hurry off to defeat the would-be king of hell, hacking and slashing their way to the Qliphoth tree and its roots.
