* The human half of a half-demon, V was severed from his original self by the sword Yamato; an heirloom inherited from his demon father.
* His original self, Vergil, is one of twin sons to the Dark Knight Sparda and his human wife, Eva. Sparda's legacy is the sense of justice that woke inside of him when he fell in love with Eva. He went on to seal the passageways between the human and demon realms.
* Sparda's betrayal against the demon king, Mundus, did not go unpunished. In the Dark Knights absence, demon troops were sent to the Sparda family manse where they were ordered to find and kill Eva and the children.
* Eva hid Dante and was killed while she searched for her other son. Vergil was out on the lawn, where he was cornered and attacked by demons. His demonic powers came to an early fruition in order to protect himself, and he subsequently fled believing that Eva and Dante had already run without him.
* Vergil would go on to live a lonely life where he honed his demonic powers and studied the occult throughout the human realm. Late in his teen years, he would encounter a tutor in the demonic; a human sorcerer named Arkham. The sorcerer would inevitably betray and mislead him.
* After being convinced by Arkham of the merits of unlocking the complex mechanism of a hell gate, Vergil is confronted by Dante about his disregard for the safety of the human realm. They clash over it repeatedly, but in the end Vergil is overpowered. He chooses to take the portal to hell as it closes rather than accept his defeat.
* In hell, he is captured by the demon king Mundus. He is tortured and violently brainwashed and physically reshaped into a demonic knight of Mundus's liking. As 'Nelo Angelo', he is sent back to the human realm to confront Dante again at Mundus's behest. He is defeated once more and presumed to be dead.
* Psyche, he's not. However, he has been grievously damaged. He wanders, disintegrating and bitter about his failures. He becomes convinced that his humanity is his weakness and that he could easily have defeated Dante all those years ago if it wasn't holding him back.
* He retrieves the Yamamoto, which has found its way to his own bastard son. In taking back the blade, he does injurious harm to Nero and then disappears. He returns to the burned out remains of the Sparda family manse and stabs himself with the Yamaoto. This creates a human and a demon.
* The demon, Urizen, triggers a demonic rite that sends a Qliphoth tree spreading all over Red Grave City, sucking its people dry of blood in order to feed its demonic fruit. Eating this fruit imbues one with powers great enough to be recognized as the king of Hell.
* The human, V, is left with minimal energy to survive on and begins to disintegrate. By creating a group pool of magic with 3 of Vergil's powerful nightmares from his time in hell, he is able to rush after Urizen. He gets in touch with both Dante and Nero, alerting them to the new enemy without explaining who either of them are.
* The demon hunters hurry off to defeat the would-be king of hell, hacking and slashing their way to the Qliphoth tree and its roots.
*While pursuing his demon half into the Qliphoth, V became lost in the maze of roots and passed beyond the veil. He ended up in the magic Hedge that surrounds the world of faeries, and was subsequently kidnapped and placed into servitude to the Castle. At the time that this happened, the Castle was fully populated with fairy members from all four courts, but something disastrous happened that killed almost all the fairy Gentry. The human servants would wake up in an empty and haunted castle, now ruled and protected by only one surviving member of each court. The Gentry squabble and struggle while trying to keep the Hedge from completely overrunning the Castle. The confused servants, who have no memory of the prior state of the Castle, struggle to unravel the mystery and perhaps save themselves from being consumed by the Hedge.
* V is the assistant scribe to the Autumn court Gentry: the Whisper on the Winds. The Whisper is a sentient flock of birds who loves to record everything and to stir up trouble. V deeply enjoys this work and is happy with his relationship with the Gentry. This is not the usual stance of the servants, many of whom resent the Gentry for their cruel and capricious natures and their servitude in a strange world. V finds that the way the faeries treat them is pretty ok, especially in comparison to how the demons of his own realm had treated his former self when he was in Hell.
* Exposure to the Hedge and to the Gentry is changing the once-human servants. The Hedge's untamed magic is incrementally changing them all in to lesser fairy. Also, in exchange for parts of themselves (namely memories), they are able to gain access to more and more fairy magic. Even those who resent the Gentry are slowly 'dampened' into an acceptance of their situation, which leads them to barter away little parts of themselves to their court and to no longer try to escape.
* V's body has changed significantly with his time in the Autumn court. There is an outline of this here. The most notable being that his true form is that of an arachnitaur, but he is able to shapeshift into a more normal looking bipedal form.
* He has also begun to develop a specific brand of fairy magic that is unique to him. When he was brought to the Castle through the Hedge, he lost access to his familiars and was thus all but forced to find a new way to engage with magic. Magic is a deep love of his, and through the compulsions of the Autumn court's nature, he masters a language based magic that allows him to convey vast intention and even bring those intentions into reality through magic runes written in his own ink blood.
* V is developing a distinct sense of self in this environment, and becoming more and more comfortable with the idea that he deserves to exist just as much as his former self does. The Whisper encourages this notion, deepening V's relationship and loyalty to the Autumn court, which he feels is his first true home as a distinct person.
* V would very much like to save the Castle, not just for his own survival, but to help rebuild it. He imagines a place where Gentry and the servants work together to make the Castle something new. Where he can study magic on the great Library for the rest of his days, meet new people who wander in from all across the realms, and become someone of his own making.
β MAJOR: * Arachnitaur body β Uses his tattoos to bind his spider form. Mostly appears bipedal with black hair and black tattoos. Unbound, white hair and no tattoos; spider body. * Lantern tail β A plaited, prehensile paper tail with a lantern at the tip.
* Runes β Can compress language into runes. Only other Autumns with the right skills can translate them in full, but anyone can look at one of his runes and feel like maybe they understand the idea of it. He especially likes to do this with poetry. Gazing on a rune of poetry gives one the sense of whatever emotions that poem tried to convey. This can either be delightful or horrifying. Also conserves a great deal of paper when he's writing down everyone's secrets ;)
* Runes in ink blood β Using his own fancy new ink blood, V can activate simple runes that take on the attributes they describe. They can either be written where he wants to use them (Lock directly on a desk drawer) or they can be lifted from where they were written and used (Shield or Sharp for COMBAT purposes). [limitations]
* Rune translation β Physically touching a written language allows him to automatically write it into his own runes. He doesn't know what he's writing until he is finished, and has to touch all of the letters to rewrite them. Very literal translations.
* Shapeshifting (Arachnid) β His tattoos now bind his major arachnid change. When bound, he has the usual bipedal look with black hair & tattoos. When unbound, he has a taur body with silver hair & no tattoos.
* Stealth / Elemental Transformation β By touching a shadow, he can meld into it and subsequently walk through wherever it is unbroken by light. Getting blasted out by light really hurts and disorients him.
* Stealth / Mind β Turns the ferrets into slinky little forward scouts who can report back to V on what they see and hear. Is activated selectively, lest he start acting like a ferret himself.
* Not only do his runes surpass mere language, they are now a versatile vector for magical intention. While versatile, his specialization is grounded by very physical needs: ink and paper.
* When written in his own blood, his runes can take on the traits they represent. This now includes animate traits-- ink familiars, as it were.
* The durability of his blood and paper for this process remains a limiter for what can be accomplished. The ink dissipates fairly quickly when active with magic. This will be V's own problem to research and solve.
* He has control over the magic writing on his body, and can use that for a passive buff. (For example, defense +5 or something like that.) He also has a set of writing on his tail.
* I will take this opportunity to improve the accuracy and nuance of his translations, but he is still bound by the physical need to touch a text to translate it.
